The Chances for Children Foundation (Chances), is the philanthropic arm of Mallee Family Care and since 2000 has been supporting young people aged 24 and under to pursue their education and opportunities in music, the arts, sport and leadership.
Over the past 25 years, Chances has provided more than 2,250 scholarships to young people living and studying in North West Victoria, South West New South Wales and the communities of Broken Hill and the Greater Wakool Ward.
Our philosophy
The absence of money or support will not stand in the way of a young person achieving their potential.
Our role
The role we play in helping to achieve that vision is to realise their potential by providing scholarships, opportunity programs and ongoing support. We partner with talented and motivated young people from northwest Victoria and southwest New South Wales to enable them to thrive.
The Chances for Children Foundation strategy is to achieve its vision by:
-
Working closely with schools to identify young people with talent and motivation who are facing financial disadvantage
-
Supporting those young people (with money and opportunities) to:
-
Confidently name and pursue their education and career goals.
-
Return to northwest Victoria and southwest New South Wales to share their knowledge, skills and networks.
-
Building ongoing and meaningful relationships with donors (large and small) to fund this activity.
Our impact
Since 2000 The Chances for Children Foundation has:
-
Invested almost $5.4 million in scholarships, awarding more than 2,250 scholarships
-
An average of 100 additional students are supported per annum across three scholarship programs
The Mallee Family Care Chances Program has a direct and causal link to the establishment of two other Chances programs in Victoria that have also made a significant impact in the lives of young people within their communities. These programs include:
-
Western Chances that was established in 2004 which has to date invested more than $9.4 in scholarships and assisted 4,067 young people to overcome barriers to success
-
Education Chances Foundation was established in 2007 and has raised $2,22,107 and awarded over 1,200 scholarships
A social return on investment study completed by Education Chances in 2023 shows that for every $1 invested in education, CHANCES students generated between $16 and $19 of social and economic benefit. This benefit was delivered to the students, their families, and the wider community of the Chances catchment area.
